What decorators need from a scaffold
A scaffold built for bricklayers is a poor scaffold for painters. We set ours up for decorating:
- Boards close to the wall, with inside boards where needed, so you can reach the surface without leaning.
- A lift at every level, so each window head, sill and soffit is at a comfortable working height.
- Ties planned around the paintwork. A tie fixed into the wall leaves an unpainted patch. We agree the tie positions with you first, and a scaffolder can move a tie when you reach it.
- Light-duty loading. Painting needs a light-duty platform (1.5 kN/m²), which keeps the scaffold lighter and the price lower than a scaffold built for masonry.
- Sheeting or netting when you are spraying, pressure washing or sanding, to keep paint and dust off cars and neighbours.
- Clear access to doors and paths, so the household can come and go.

Can you paint a house without scaffolding?
You can paint a bungalow or the ground floor from steps or a tower. For the upper floors of a two-storey house, a ladder is only suitable for short, light tasks. HSE guidance is that if a job keeps you on a ladder for more than 30 minutes at a time, you should use different equipment.
Painting is slow, two-handed work. Preparing and painting one sash window takes hours, not minutes. A scaffold or tower lets you work with both hands, keep paint and tools beside you, and reach every surface squarely, which shows in the finish.

Interior and stairwell scaffolding
Stairwells are the most awkward space to paint in any house, because the floor is at a different level on each side. We build small stair scaffolds and adjustable-leg towers that sit safely on the treads and give a flat platform over the stairs.
For large rooms with high ceilings, such as halls, churches, showrooms and atriums, a birdcage scaffold gives a boarded deck across the whole room so decorators can work on the ceiling as if it were a floor.
Indoor scaffolds stand on boards and protective sheeting to look after floors, and standards are capped so they do not mark finishes.

Painting period houses in Oxford
Much of Oxford’s housing is Victorian and Edwardian, with timber sash windows, painted render and decorative brickwork that all need regular maintenance. Three local points are worth knowing:
- Terraces open straight onto the pavement in many streets. A scaffold on the pavement needs an Oxfordshire County Council licence: £180 for the first week, or £220 on a bus route. We apply for it.
- Conservation areas cover much of central and north Oxford. Scaffolding itself does not need consent, but changing a paint colour on a listed building might.
- Paint needs dry weather. Tell us if rain may stretch the job, so the hire period allows for it.
How it works
- Free survey. We look at the surfaces to be painted and agree the lifts and tie positions with you or your decorator.
- Fixed quote. Delivery, erection, the agreed hire period and removal.
- Erection. Usually under a day.
- Adjustments. Call us to move a tie or add a board. Only scaffolders should alter the scaffold.
- Removal. As soon as the final coat is dry.
Scaffolding for Painting FAQs
Do you need scaffolding to paint a house?
For the upper floors of a two-storey house, yes in most cases. Ladders are only suitable for short, light tasks, and HSE guidance suggests other equipment for any job that keeps you on a ladder for more than 30 minutes at a time. A bungalow or ground floor can usually be painted from steps or a tower.
How much does scaffolding for painting a house cost?
Scaffolding for painting costs £400 to £700 for one side of a house and £800 to £2,500 or more for the whole exterior, depending on the size of the property. A scaffold tower for windows or a small area costs £30 to £70 a week.
What type of scaffolding is used for painting?
Exterior painting normally uses a light-duty independent scaffold tied to the building, with boards close to the wall. Small jobs use a mobile alloy tower. Interiors use stair towers for stairwells and birdcage scaffolds for high ceilings.
Is a scaffold tower enough to paint the outside of a house?
A tower is enough for windows, doors and small areas on firm, level ground. For a full repaint of a two-storey house, fixed scaffolding is faster, because the whole wall is reachable at once and nothing has to be moved.
Can you scaffold a stairwell for decorating?
Yes. We use stair towers with adjustable legs or build a small scaffold over the stairs, giving a flat platform to paint the walls and ceiling above the staircase.
Can the scaffold ties be moved so I can paint behind them?
Yes. We agree the tie positions with you before erection, and a tie can be repositioned when you reach it. Ties keep the scaffold stable and must only be moved by a scaffolder, so call us instead of undoing one yourself.
How long will I need the scaffolding for exterior painting?
It depends on the size of the house, the preparation needed and the weather. Hire is quoted for an agreed period and can be extended by the week if rain delays the job.
