Scaffolding for home extension work

What do we scaffold in Oxford?

Oxford mixes Victorian terraces, North Oxford villas, post-war estates and listed college buildings, so no two scaffolds are the same. These are the jobs we do most often:

  • Roof repairs and re-roofing. A platform at the eaves with guardrails and toe boards. See roof access scaffolding.
  • Chimney repairs and repointing. A scaffold to the eaves plus a platform around the stack, from £250.
  • Extensions and loft conversions. Scaffolding that rises with the brickwork, often with a temporary roof while the old roof is open.
  • Repointing, rendering and brickwork. A full-height scaffold with boards close to the wall, with careful ties on soft Headington stone.
  • Windows, fascias, soffits, gutters and solar panels. Usually one or two elevations for a week or two.
  • Shopfronts and offices. Commercial scaffolding planned around trading hours and pedestrians.
  • Short, low jobs. A scaffold tower from £30 is often cheaper than a fixed scaffold. We will tell you at the survey if a tower would do.

How much does scaffolding cost in Oxford?

Most house scaffolding in Oxford costs between £400 and £2,500, depending on the size of the house, how many sides are scaffolded and how long it stays up. These are guide prices for a standard hire period. Your quote is fixed once we have seen the property.

House or jobWhat is scaffoldedGuide price
One side of a houseFront or rear elevation£400 to £700 total
Two-storey terraced houseFront and back£700 to £900 a month
Two-storey semi-detachedThree sides£850 to £1,200 a month
Two-storey detachedAll four sides£1,000 to £1,500 a month
Chimney scaffoldEaves plus stack platformFrom £250
Loft conversionRoof access, often two or three sides£1,000 to £2,000 or more
Scaffold towerHire for low, short jobsFrom £30

Four things move the price: the height and length of the scaffold, how easy the access is, how long you need it, and whether it stands on the pavement. A pavement licence from Oxfordshire County Council costs £180 for the first week, or £220 on a bus route, and we apply for it on your behalf. Terraces with no rear access and parking bay suspensions in a controlled parking zone can add to the cost, and we tell you at the survey.

Scaffolding for Oxford's terraces, villas and listed buildings

Oxford’s housing and its traffic rules both need planning before the lorry arrives:

  • Terraces with no rear access. In Jericho, East Oxford, Grandpont and Osney, materials for the rear scaffold are carried through the house, and the front scaffold usually stands on the pavement under licence.
  • North Oxford villas. Tall Victorian gables and steep roofs in Summertown, Walton Manor and Park Town need higher lifts and extra edge protection.
  • Listed and college buildings. With 18 conservation areas and hundreds of listed buildings, we plan ties that do not damage soft limestone or historic fabric. Listed building consent is about the work, not the scaffold.
  • Post-war estates. Cowley, Rose Hill, Blackbird Leys, Barton and Wood Farm usually have straightforward access and quick erection.
  • Controlled parking zones. Most inner suburbs are CPZs. If the scaffold or lorry needs a bay, we arrange a suspension with the county council.
  • City-centre access. Our vans are compliant with the Zero Emission Zone, and Botley Road and the traffic filters do not stop us reaching any part of the city.

Areas we cover in Oxford

We scaffold across the whole city: Headington, Old Headington, Marston, Northway, Barton and Risinghurst (OX3); Cowley, Iffley, Rose Hill, Littlemore, Blackbird Leys, Florence Park and East Oxford (OX4); Jericho, Summertown, Wolvercote, Cutteslowe, Botley and North Oxford (OX2); and the city centre, Grandpont and New Hinksey (OX1). Our yard at Unit 27, M40 Business Centre, Wheatley is about 6 miles east along the A40, so Headington and Marston are 10 to 15 minutes away and the city centre 20 to 25 minutes.

Scaffolding in Oxford: local know-how

We work across the whole city, including Headington, Marston, Summertown, Jericho, Botley, Cowley, Iffley, Rose Hill and Littlemore.

Oxford has a high number of conservation areas and listed buildings, along with tight Victorian terraces in East Oxford and Jericho where the only access is a narrow side passage or a rear garden. We plan each scaffold around bay windows, party walls and parked cars, and use boards and tie positions that protect older brick and stone.

Where a scaffold has to stand on a pavement or road, a scaffolding licence is needed from Oxfordshire County Council, which is the highway authority for the city. We apply for it and supply the lighting and signage. Many Oxford homes are rented, so we are happy to work with landlords and letting agents to fit the job around tenancies.

Scaffolding in Oxford FAQs

Do you provide scaffolding in Oxford?

Yes. Premier Scaffolding Oxford puts up domestic and commercial scaffolding across the city and the OX1, OX2, OX3 and OX4 postcodes. We work from our yard at Unit 27, M40 Business Centre, Wheatley (OX33 1XW), about 6 miles east of the city, carry out a free site survey before quoting, and do not charge upfront fees.

How much does scaffolding cost in Oxford?

A two-storey terraced house typically costs £700 to £900 a month, a semi-detached £850 to £1,200 and a detached house £1,000 to £1,500. A single elevation is usually £400 to £700 in total, a chimney scaffold starts from £250 and scaffold tower hire from £30. We confirm a fixed price after a free site survey.

Do I need a licence for scaffolding on the pavement in Oxford?

Yes, if any part of the scaffold stands on or over a public pavement or road. The licence comes from Oxfordshire County Council, not Oxford City Council. It costs £180 for the first week, or £220 on a bus route, and the council asks for at least five working days' notice. We apply for it on your behalf.

My terrace in Jericho or East Oxford has no rear access. Can you still scaffold the back?

Yes. We carry the tubes, boards and fittings through the house or along a shared passage, protect floors and doorways, and build the rear scaffold in the garden. It takes a little longer than a house with side access, and we allow for that in your fixed quote.

Can you scaffold listed buildings and college properties in Oxford?

Yes. Oxford has 18 conservation areas and a great many listed buildings. We plan tie positions and protection so limestone, render and historic joinery are not damaged, and we can use freestanding or buttressed designs where no ties are allowed. Any listed building consent relates to the work being done, not the scaffold.

Will the Zero Emission Zone or the traffic filters stop you reaching my house?

No. Our vehicles are compliant with the city-centre Zero Emission Zone, and vans are exempt from the planned traffic filters. The Botley Road closure can add a few minutes to West Oxford jobs, and we plan deliveries around it.

Can you suspend a parking bay in a controlled parking zone?

Yes. If the scaffold or the delivery lorry needs a bay in a CPZ such as Jericho, East Oxford, Headington or Summertown, we apply to Oxfordshire County Council for a suspension. It needs a few days' notice, so tell us when you book.

How long can scaffolding stay up in Oxford?

Most house scaffolds stay up for 4 to 8 weeks and can be extended by the week if your job runs over. Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, the scaffold is inspected before first use and at least every 7 days after that.
